Contact Executive Board Member at Large
Joe Meehan
Primary duties: The primary duty of the executive board is to keep our business, our house in order. We discuss the business of the local. We make various decision. We approve the transfers of money from account to account. We discuss and approve membership applications - which is the majority of the executive board meeting. We'll get an application, we'll take a look at it and then we'll determine whether or not it gets passed on to the floor for a vote, or whether we table it or whatever it is we choose to do at that time.
When did you become get into the electrical industry?: I actually started out in the Air Force in 1982, as an electronics technician. When I got out of the Air Force in 1986, I only served one term, I dabbled in low volt stuff such as whole house audio, cable tv and ultimately satellite tv.
When did you join Local Union #113?: In 2000 I interviewed with the apprenticeship committee and got into the apprenticeship.
Favorite jobsite or job you have worked on: My favorite job probably would have been my second go around at Intel. It was my first job as a journeyman. It was my favorite job because I got to look at things a little bit differently and I went from student to teacher. I think that's always the best job, when you go from the apprentice to journeyman, not because of the additional pay, not because of the title, but simply because of the transformation from student to teacher, it was almost overwhelming but it was very gratifying at the same time
Favorite thing about Colorado Springs: My favorite thing about Colorado Springs is the climate. I like the weather, its a good climate.
Advice for apprentices: The apprenticeship is a testament of perseverance. You hear this all the time, all good things come to he who waits and the apprenticeship has its moments that test your limits- its designed to be that way. The lesson is perseverance and when it all comes to an end you forget the tough days. When you go into that testing room and you walk out of there with that license all that stuff is forgotten and its amazing how four years of torment ends in four hours. my advise is persevere, its truly worth it.
Hobbies: I have two kids and hockey and I raise reptiles. Hockey is a big time hobby in this house.
Favorite reptile: Ball Python
Favorite part of the union: Gotta be the solidarity of the brotherhood because without that, there is no union.
One thing that you'd like to change about the union: Education of what we need to do. I think Ed Hill has done some of that with the code of excellence and some of the other videos that the IBEW is now producing. I think we gotta get behind these videos and really listen to them. We need to move in that direction. There was a time in the 20's and 30's where we needed tough guys, and you're always gonna need tough guys, but we need smart guys now. Because smart guys out there are trying to take away from us what's taken us a century to achieve. I think we need to place more emphasis in education.
Favorite sports team: New York Mets
